Dokra~A 4000 year old art on verge of extinction

Dhokra is a tribe of metalsmiths of West Bengal. The tribe which are still nomads with few settlements now extends from Jharkhand to West Bengal and Orissa to Chattisgarh Dhokras. Their technique of lost wax or cire per due casting is named after their tribe, hence Dhokra metal casting.

The craft of lost-wax casting is an ancient one in India. The earliest known examples of cire per due work include the famous bronze 'dancing girl' found in Mohenjo-Daro in the Indus Valley. Lost wax casting subsequently spread, whether by communication or parallel invention, to most civilizations. The traditional themes of these cast metal sculptures include images of Hindu Or 'tribal' gods and goddesses, bowls, figures of people or deities riding elephants, musicians, horse and rider figures, elephants, cattle, and other figures of people, animals, and birds.

The Lost Wax or Cire Perdue Technique

The casting of finely detailed metal artefacts by means of the cire perdue, or lost wax, technique is almost as old as settled civilisation. The technique is simple to describe (but difficult to perfect). It involves six stages:

Core-making: A clay core is made, slightly smaller than the final intended size of the artefact. Clay used is a mix of two-three clays – fine clay near the river beds, Clay from the  Termite mound or ‘Ant Hills’  and normal sand. Cow Dung is also used along with rice husk in pre-determined proportions. The core may be hardened by firing or sun-drying.

Modelling: A detailed wax model is built up around the core, to the thickness of metal desired in the finished object. Wax is derived from natural plant resin extracted from the Sal tree (Shorea robusta) mixed with mustard oil or from Bee-hives.

Moulding: The wax model is coated with a thin layer of very fine clay, which will form an impression of every detail of the model. When this layer is dry and hard, further layers of clay are added to the mould. One or more pouring channels are provided, through which molten metal can run to fill the mould. This model is then left to dry for 3-4 days.

De-waxing: The mould is pre-heated to melt the wax, and the molten wax is poured out and can be recovered for re-use. This leaves a cavity which has the exact size, shape and surface contours of the intended artefact.

Casting: Molten metal is poured into the cavity till the point where you can see the metal on top and there is no more space for more metal and the mould left to cool for the next 5-6 hours.

Finishing: The metal filled mould is then broken out and a semi-finished artefact is ready. Traces of baked clay are removed and surface blemishes and defects repaired. This artefacts is then depending the need processed with files or amery paper.

Tribal Motifs ~ Ganesh Dokra

The tribals who create the famous dokra designs are highly religious and daily worshipping is a part of their life. Lord Ganesha is one of their favourite gods. Lord Ganesh is the son of Goddess Durga (Goddess of strength) and Lord Shiva (The creator and the destroyer).

Ganesh is said to be the remover of all obstracles and so the tribals of West Bengal adorn their necklaces with Ganesh designs.

Below are some of the very popular dokra designs. All are handmade by the tribal people from Bengal.

Tribal Motifs ~ Kali Mata Dokra

In my last blog on dokra motifs I spoke about the Sun dokra. This blog is related to another very special and popular dokra "The Kali Mata" dokra.

If you are familiar with Hindu religion and its customs then you must have heard of  Goddess Kali or also called Kali Mata( where Mata is the Hindi for mother).

She is the destroyer of all evil, the epitome of strength and power. She is fierce yetloving, all powerful yet soft. You might be wondering why Kali mata has her tongue outside?

According to mythlogy, when the demons conquered earth they were demolishing all humans. None of the Gods were able to help as the demons were too powerful and they had a blessing that  no man will be able to harm them. So the Gods thought and thought and finally they decided to send Goddess Kali on earth to counter the demons.

Goddess Kali after descending on earth found earth to be fully infested with demons who were killing
all humans. She went into a fit of rage and started killing anything and everything who came on her way.

Soon the Gods realised that if Mother Kali does not calm down then all creations will be lost. With demons all other creations will be wiped out. So they decided on what to do but could not find any solutions. So  all the Gods went to the "God of the Gods" ie Lord Shiva who also happens to be Goddess Kali's husband.

He consoled all the Gods saying that he will do something so that Goddess Kali gains her senses and stops her killing spree. What he did was he too descended on earth and just lied on the path which Mother Kali was walking on.

Not seeing what was on the path, Goddess Kali stepped on her husband. When she looked down she saw Lord Shiva her husband and that she was standing on him.And that was the awakard moment for her when she just put her tongue out as if  saying...

" Oh my bad....why I lost my temper because of which I did not notice anything "

So thus she came back to her true motherly senses and hence the world was saved.

                                                 source:internet

Kali mata is highly revered by the Hindus and also the tribals. They seek Goddess Kali's blessings
so for strength and goodness.Kali mata is a part of their life and for the tribals whatever is tied to their
everyday life, they depict them in their dokra designs.

Tribal Motifs ~ The Sun Dokra

In Indian mythology and religion the Sun occupies a place of reverence and respect. The Sun is the source of all life forms and without Sun most life will be at stake.

The ingenious tribes worship the Sun as the sustainer of life on earth. Like Hindu ritual the tribal ritual also encourages everyone to start their day after paying homage to Sun God.

In Dokra or the lost wax technique art form, the tribals make make every day objects that are part and parcel of their regular life as symbols of their ornaments. Since the Sun occupies a pivotal place in their life , the Sun dokra is one of the most important and popular dokra symbols.

Below are some of the dokra that my tribal artisans had created. The dokra jewellery have with them the rustic and raw appeal since every item is completely hand made by the atrisans.

Reviving the lost arts of India

Much like a species, on the verge of extinction, numerous art forms of India are about to   get obliterated from the face of this planet.

Reasons? Quite similar to those poor extinct creatures actually.
Lack of breathing space. Lack of advertising and many more.

But one of the prime ones is the lack of opportunity for these legendary craftsmen. So they become poorer everyday. And soon they are forced to encourage their next generation to leave this form of art and venture into something that brings in more money, food and a shed to live in.

It's our goal, mission, idea, or whatever word you might find suitable, to advertise these brilliant craftsmen and their work to the world. Create a channel so that they can create, sell and make enough to live out of from their skills that they've protected for generations.

Visit HerChoice.In. It's unlike any other online store where you buy jewellery from. When you buy any product from HerChoice, we share 15% of the cost with these folks(apart from the manufacturing cost) who are struggling to make a living.

So, do you pay more at HerChoice. In than any other online store? NO. A big No.
Because all these products come straight from the huts of the craftsmen and not from any fancy factory or through some middlemen, you get the benefit of buying them at the lowest price possible.

Come, let's help the lost arts of India breath again. We can do it together.

Dokra Artisan at work. Putting wax on the surface of the soil mold.

Here's one of the final products. Dokra Necklace. A fish.
