Tribal Motifs ~ Ganesh Dokra

The tribals who create the famous dokra designs are highly religious and daily worshipping is a part of their life. Lord Ganesha is one of their favourite gods. Lord Ganesh is the son of Goddess Durga (Goddess of strength) and Lord Shiva (The creator and the destroyer).

Ganesh is said to be the remover of all obstracles and so the tribals of West Bengal adorn their necklaces with Ganesh designs.

Below are some of the very popular dokra designs. All are handmade by the tribal people from Bengal.

Tribal Motifs ~ Kali Mata Dokra

In my last blog on dokra motifs I spoke about the Sun dokra. This blog is related to another very special and popular dokra "The Kali Mata" dokra.

If you are familiar with Hindu religion and its customs then you must have heard of  Goddess Kali or also called Kali Mata( where Mata is the Hindi for mother).

She is the destroyer of all evil, the epitome of strength and power. She is fierce yetloving, all powerful yet soft. You might be wondering why Kali mata has her tongue outside?

According to mythlogy, when the demons conquered earth they were demolishing all humans. None of the Gods were able to help as the demons were too powerful and they had a blessing that  no man will be able to harm them. So the Gods thought and thought and finally they decided to send Goddess Kali on earth to counter the demons.

Goddess Kali after descending on earth found earth to be fully infested with demons who were killing
all humans. She went into a fit of rage and started killing anything and everything who came on her way.

Soon the Gods realised that if Mother Kali does not calm down then all creations will be lost. With demons all other creations will be wiped out. So they decided on what to do but could not find any solutions. So  all the Gods went to the "God of the Gods" ie Lord Shiva who also happens to be Goddess Kali's husband.

He consoled all the Gods saying that he will do something so that Goddess Kali gains her senses and stops her killing spree. What he did was he too descended on earth and just lied on the path which Mother Kali was walking on.

Not seeing what was on the path, Goddess Kali stepped on her husband. When she looked down she saw Lord Shiva her husband and that she was standing on him.And that was the awakard moment for her when she just put her tongue out as if  saying...

" Oh my bad....why I lost my temper because of which I did not notice anything "

So thus she came back to her true motherly senses and hence the world was saved.

Kali mata is highly revered by the Hindus and also the tribals. They seek Goddess Kali's blessings
so for strength and goodness.Kali mata is a part of their life and for the tribals whatever is tied to their
everyday life, they depict them in their dokra designs.
